Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography, is a non-invasive imaging method that uses sound waves to create images of structures within your body.

Sonographers are specially trained medical professionals who follow strict protocols, and all Seven Hills sonographers are board-certified with the Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS). They capture the best image possible, ensuring your provider has the information they’ll need to need to identify and treat any related medical conditions.

Gynecological Ultrasounds

Used to view the organs in your pelvic area, these may be recommended by your provider if you have abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, are experiencing infertility, need a follow-up for an IUD insertion, or have other symptoms.

• Transabdominal ultrasound is performed on top of the pelvic area. Your sonographer will gently move a transducer over your abdomen.  Best results are achieved when your bladder is filled a short time before the exam.
• Transvaginal ultrasound is an internal exam during which a special transducer is gently inserted into the vagina. A full bladder is generally not required, but there may be some discomfort and pressure from the probe.  At times it may be necessary to use combined approaches to get the best views. The sonographer will always discuss your individual needs with you prior to proceeding with the transvaginal approach.
• SIS Ultrasound (Saline Infused Ultrasound) may be ordered if your provider needs a more in depth view of the uterus and uterine lining. This specialized scan is performed at the same time as a transvaginal ultrasound. A thin, plastic catheter is inserted into the uterus through the cervix  in order to inject saline into the endometrial cavity. It’s possible for this procedure to cause some discomfort, however you’ll know your results right away.

Obstetric (OB) Ultrasounds

An obstetric ultrasound is used to monitor the health of your baby while still in the womb, as well as the health of your uterus and ovaries.

Your provider may recommend a transvaginal ultrasound in which a lubricated, tubular probe is gently inserted into the vagina; or a transabdominal ultrasound where your sonographer will move a transducer over the top of your belly.

• Early Pregnancy and Dating Ultrasounds are performed at 6-8 weeks gestation. They can confirm your due date and determine the number of babies you’ll have. During this early scan you won’t be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat, but you’ll be able to get that special, first view of your baby.
• Anatomy Scans are performed between 21-22 weeks gestation. This scan takes a detailed look at all of your baby’s physical structures and will often – but not always – show the sex of your baby.  The quality of the image and ability to determine sex depends on the baby’s position, gestational age, your BMI, and access to unobstructed views. If it’s not possible to capture the necessary views of the baby’s anatomy, the scan will be repeated.
• 3D Ultrasounds create an image similar to a traditional photograph. While this isn’t a diagnostic tool or necessary to ensure the health of your baby, it can provide a fun sneak peek of your little one.

Comfortable and Inclusive Care

Many women want to share in the experience and view the scan as it is happening, thus all Seven Hills ultrasound rooms are equipped with a 21” LCD Mother/Family viewing monitors. Although you won’t be able to have recording devices in the room, you’ll receive an  image of your baby to take home.

Your sonographer will also make every effort to explain what’s being viewed, however they can’t interpret or discuss any findings. Your provider will share your results with you at your next visit and be available for any questions you may have.
