An Important Update on our West Fork Midwifery Services

Working with a midwife offers you the opportunity to experience evidence-based and low-intervention care while still having access to physician directed intervention when medically necessary. This supportive model of care fosters a shared approach to decision making during pregnancy, labor, and delivery – giving you the tools to shape your own experience.

Informed and Individualized Care

What is a midwife?

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are board-certified health care providers with advanced training in nursing, personalized maternity care, and women’s health care. While they are known primarily for their expertise in childbirth, they also provide basic primary and gynecological care for women throughout all phases of their lives.

A midwife’s approach centers on the belief that pregnancy and childbirth are natural, healthy processes and that many women require few, if any, medical interventions. They practice with a heavy focus on education and empowerment and are experts in knowing the difference between normal changes that occur during pregnancy and symptoms that require extra attention.

Even still, midwives don’t go it alone – they work closely with obstetricians to ensure access to any necessary medical interventions should any complications arise.

How Midwives Support Your Experience

The very roots of the term midwife – with woman – reflect their holistic role: to be with you, listen to you, share knowledge with you, and guide you through this special yet sometimes challenging time in your life. You’ll receive continuous, hands-on assistance that incorporates your family’s wants, needs, and desires into every decision.

CNMs support over 300,000 women in their childbirth experience each year in the U.S. – with excellent birth outcomes and high patient satisfaction.

Certified Nurse Midwives provide:

Obstetric Care

  • Prenatal care
  • Education about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care
  • Labor and delivery care
  • Emotional and practical support during labor
  • Pain medication during labor, if desired
  • Referrals to doctors when needed
  • Postpartum care
  • Breastfeeding support

Gynecologic Care

  • Annual exams
  • Adolescent Care
  • Family planning
  • Contraception management
  • Treatment of common gynecologic problems

Is a midwife a good fit for me?

Women with healthy, low-risk pregnancies are most often the best fit for midwife care, but women with certain high-risk conditions may still be able to partner with both a midwife and an obstetrician in order to receive the additional support they desire.

Our Seven Hills providers can help you carefully consider your personal circumstances to determine what level of care best meets your medical and emotional needs.
