Endometrial Ablation

Heavy menstrual bleeding can easily disrupt daily life, causing many women to miss out on the events and moments that matter most. It’s often thought of as a normal part of being a woman, but heavy menstrual bleeding is actually a common medical condition — and relief is possible. Endometrial ablation, a non-surgical, one-time procedure, can help reduce menstrual flow and restore balance.

Experienced Providers. Expert Care.

What Is Endometrial Ablation?

A safe and convenient outpatient procedure, endometrial ablation uses precisely measured radiofrequency to remove the lining of your uterus, helping to reduce heavy or prolonged menstrual flow. It’s possible that some women will stop having periods completely after the procedure.

Common Causes & Symptoms of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, and even endometriosis can cause heavy menstrual bleeding.

1 in 5 women suffer from heavy bleeding or painful periods, but many suffer in silence, unaware of available treatment options.

Speak to your provider if you:

  • Soak through one or more sanitary pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours
  • Need to wake up and change sanitary pads or tampons during the night
  • Have periods that last longer than one week
  • Pass large blood clots during your period
  • Have symptoms of anemia such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and headaches
  • Have severe cramping

Is Endometrial Ablation a Good Fit for You?

If other treatment options including medication or the placement of an IUD haven’t been effective in reducing menstrual flow, endometrial ablation may be a recommended avenue for relief. However, ablation is not recommended for all women. Open the conversation with your provider to help determine if the procedure is a good fit for you.

Ablation is generally not recommended for women who have:

  • Uterine, cervical, or endometrial cancer
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • A vaginal or cervical infection
  • A weak uterine wall
  • A desire to become pregnant in the future
  • An infection of the uterus
  • A scar from a Caesarean section
  • An intrauterine device (IUD)
  • A disorder of the uterus or endometrium
  • Reached menopause

What You Can Expect During the Procedure

Your Seven Hill’s provider will use the NovaSure© endometrial ablation procedure, a non-hormonal, safe, and effective one-time treatment to remove the lining of your uterus. The procedure will last 5 minutes or less and will take place in your provider’s office.

No general anesthesia is required. Your provider may give you an anti-inflammatory medication a few hours prior to the procedure and/or administer a local anesthetic into your uterus (through your cervix) to minimize discomfort.

  • After slightly dilating your cervix, your provider will insert a slender wand through your cervix into your uterus.
  • A netted device will extend from the wand and expand to fit the shape and size of your uterus.
  • The wand will emit precisely measured radiofrequency to remove the endometrial lining.
  • The netted device will be pulled back into the wand and both will be removed from your uterus.

Recovery

Your provider may place some limits on your activity for the first few days after the procedure; it’s recommended you refrain from engaging in sexual intercourse, using tampons, and lifting heavy objects. Most women are able to fully return to their normal activities within one week.
